Cooper had art class at Gymboree (only a few more left before nursery!!) today. We focused on sculpting and Coop was overjoyed. He loves playing with Play-doh, but mommy doesn't like the mess, so he does not get to play with it very often at home! The teacher (Miss Cherry) asked the kids to make something like a snake or a ball with their dough. Coop looked at me and asked to make a jaozi. I started giggling and asked if he really wanted to make a jaozi and not a dinosaur or a ball. He insisted that he wanted a jaozi. For those of you who do not know what a jaozi is, it is like a triangle shaped ravioli with a variety of yummy things in the middle. Our ayi primarily puts pork, egg, and green onions in ours, but there are a ton of varieties! After they are made, very lovingly by hand, they are steamed. The kids all love them and usually a contest erupts when ayi cooks them over who can eat the most!! El's friend Minori holds the record in our house with a whopping 14 jaozi eaten at one sitting - this is pretty amazing considering she is 7!!!
Back to art class...Coop made his jaozi while the rest of his classmates made snakes, birthday cakes, flowers, balls, etc...
Here is the slightly painted blue jaozi that the little expat did today with all of his "local" friends!!
